Get rid of the TV. Do not use television or video games as a baby sitter for toddlers while older children are receiving instruction. The disruption of switching on entertainment takes older children out of the realm of imagination and interaction. Use more engaging activities to keep everyone has eyes and minds on higher things. Pull younger children back into the teaching time for activities with a strong tactile component. If you are taking a child or children through a science lesson and you are going to peel an orange and observe the structure of the fruit, that iss a great activity to pull younger ones into. With an extra orange, the simple act of controlling the times that they are allowed to "join in" keeps you in the drivers has seat.
A Sound Treasure Hunt will have your child gathering items around the house all starting with the same letter - and of course there has to be some treasure at the end of the game, so be prepared! I spy with my little eye is another great game if you use sounds instead of the names of letters, and it can be played anywhere. You do not need worksheets for this one either, but you may want to join the local library rather than spend a fortune on books that your child outgrows as quickly as they outgrow their clothes! The more you read to your child, with your child and in front of your child, the quicker they will learn to read, and learn how to enjoy it too.
The worksheets should require a child to think just a little. If a child finds any activity too difficult, give him an easier one. It is important that the child does not get frustrated. Remember that different children have greatly varying levels of comprehension and pace of learning. It will help if the worksheets are well-illustrated. Use of cartoon characters would make it more interesting for a child. Encapsulating common situations encountered at home, school, in the market place etc and using common objects known to children would make the worksheets more relevant.
There are several birthday printables gift tags available on the website with over six different shapes of gifts available, these will offer your kids alternatives to explore creativity both at school and at home. This will help in cognitive skills development as small kids need to touch and see an object in order to remember well.
Let us face it, when completing tasks we all love to do the easy things first. Why? Because it build our confidence. We get excited when we are ticking items off our to-do list. BANG! 1st item ticked off. BANG! Double tick that item now I am rolling. The only problem with the tick-off easy items first approach is that you use up your best energy at the start of any study session and so if you are tackling the easy parts with your best energy your energy reserves will be low when it comes time to tackle the hard part of what you need to get done. So what happens then? Bet you can not guess! You can guess? That is right - you get tired, you get grumpy, you get frustrated and then just give up and go play Xbox. We all do it. We really should not though. So get in the habit of dedicating your best energy to the difficult tasks first and completing the easy "I can do it with my eyes closed" stuff last.
Failure to engage these men at a young age has proved disastrous for them and the communities they live in. But this is not an issue confined to the USA. In the For-bury district of Dunedin in New Zealand, Barbara has been overseeing a radical experiment. The local school was on the verge of anarchy. In desperation the local education authority turned to Professor for help. Her immediate response was to request a complete change of staff. New staff would be trained in delivering the curriculum in a variety of teaching styles suited to the individual needs of the learner. I was privileged to spend a fortnight at the school observing Head-teacher Janis Tonia and her staff successfully meeting the considerable challenges posed by a badly failing school in an area where gang culture is a fact of life. If these methods can work in that situation they can work anywhere.
The next step is learning to write numbers, and this is where mathematics worksheets become almost a necessity. Unless you have great handwriting, lots of spare time and a fair amount of patience, writing worksheets will help you teach this valuable skill to your child. Dot-to-dot, tracing, following the lines and other writing exercises will help your child learn how to write numbers. A good set of worksheets will include practice sheets with various methods to help your child learn to write numbers. Patterns and sequencing and basic addition and subtraction should follow on from counting and number recognition. By the time your child is starting kindergarten or school, they should be able to count to 20 with ease, write numbers, do simple addition sums, and have some understanding of patterns and sequences. Even if they are attending preschool, extra practice at home will help them improve their math.
